ELA and Math standards change forthe 2013-2014 school year
The current ELA and Math State Standards that we are familiar with are out...but the replacements are exciting! The California State Board of Education has adopted the new Common Core State Standards that were recently designed by various educators and teams across our nation. The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
Please review this three minute video on the importance of having common standards nationwide.

Building on the excellent foundation of standards states have laid, the Common Core State Standards are the first step in providing our young people with a high-quality education. It should be clear to every student, parent, and teacher what the standards of success are in every school.
So, we have new standards...and each district will be left to determine how they're taught. How, then, will Acacia Middle School (H.U.S.D.) teach these new standards during 2013-2014?

Rigorous Curriculum Design
Over the past school year our teachers and administrators have been traveling through the Rigorous Curriculum Design process. The goal of this process was to create Curricular Units of Study that align our new California Common Core Standards with current research based instructional techniques that our teachers will implement. Our students, once taught, will embark on educational journeys through various authentic performance ssessments designed to challenge their minds even more. Please know...your child's education will be different from what you have known in the past...while it will be fun and more free, it will definitely be more rigorous!
This improved way of instruction will challenge young minds yet provide opportunities for fun/rigorous performance tasks that show content mastery and 21st Century skills. The idea is to better prepare our students for high school, college, and life. All activities that are done in the classroom will have an accompanying level of "Depth of Knowledge" that will tell the teacher (and student) to what level the skill needs to be mastered. You can see these levels by clicking here.
